History
GATE Petroleum Company, founded by Herbert H. Peyton, began as a single service station in Jacksonville, Florida, nearly 60 years ago. The GATE name was derived from the Chamber of Commerce slogan – “Jacksonville: Gateway to Florida.” Today, GATE is one of Florida’s largest privately-held companies with operations in a variety of industries. 1960
Herbert Peyton opens the first GATE service station in Jacksonville, Florida.
1964
GATE establishes its first corporate office, purchasing land at 9540 San Jose Blvd. for an office and service station. The location continues to serve as GATE's corporate headquarters today.
1960's
GATE begins a Fuel Service Division to sell to residents. Today, the Fuel Service Division offers commercial, retail, marine, industrial and residential fuel while operating a fleet of tankers that provide petroleum to all GATE retail stores and to commercial accounts throughout the Southeast.
1970's
GATE begins expansion of its service stations into Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee and Louisiana. Expansion throughout the Southeast continues throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
1985
GATE becomes a major sponsor of the Jacksonville River Run, an annual 15-kilometer road race in Jacksonville that attracts both competitive and recreational runners. GATE became the title sponsor in 1993, a partnership that continues today.
1990
GATE significantly expands its presence in Northeast Florida with its acquisition of 28 7-Eleven stores.
2008
With a long history of corporate philanthropy, the company formed the GATE Foundation to formalize its corporate giving which includes non-profits grants, in-store coin box collections and an annual charity golf tournament.
2015
The company launches its first Fresh Kitchen, a fast-casual café serving freshly-prepared food and drinks. GATE continues expansion of this concept into stores throughout its network.

There are approximately 200 GATE service stations, about half of which are company operated. GATE stores are located in in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Can’t remember what color your car really is? Swing by a GATE convenience store that is equipped with car wash tunnels. Pay for your choice of wash level at the pump, inside the store or at the wash entrance, then pull into the tunnel and let us do the work. Inside need sprucing up too? Take advantage of our vacuum areas located at most GATE locations.
Fresh out of time? Swing by our fast-casual café and pick up a slice of fresh-made cheese, pepperoni or sausage/pepperoni pizza, or a tasty empanada baked right in our kitchen. Need a quick pick-me-up on the go? Our Fresh Kitchen team can whip up a cool iced or blended coffee to get you through the day.
GATE’s philosophy is to be responsive to the fueling needs of our customers and to do so with sensitivity to the environment. All GATE stores offer Regular, Plus and Premium E10 (a blend of 10% ethanol and 90% gasoline) fuel. Many GATE stores now also offer Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel, Reg 88 (also known as E15), E85 and Ethanol-free gasoline.
